Situated in a far west corner of Douglas County, Elkhorn is a charming suburb of Omaha that was annexed as a city neighborhood in 2007. Founded in 1965, Elkhorn was named after the Elkhorn River, which today forms a section of its western border. Downtown Elkhorn today is virtually untouched from its developmental roots going back to 1866 when the Union Pacific Railroad purchased a 40-acre tract from some settlers. Elkhorn’s river access was the perfect place for a bustling westward railroad movement to the west. With the establishment of Elkhorn Station, significant growth began to spring up in the mid- to late 1800s.
Today residents experience the nostalgia of days gone by while enjoying the fabulous eateries that occupy historic buildings in downtown Elkhorn. The former one-room school house and community center was a place where the rich tradition of academic excellence began. That tradition still reigns today with Elkhorn High School and Elkhorn South High School. What began as a point on the Union Pacific Railroad in 1867 has grown into a vibrant neighborhood extending from Rainwood Road on the north to Harrison Street on the south.
